Spring Workshop: A Powerful, but poorly understood Preservation Tool: The DEP Cultural Resource Notice Process. |
| |
A powerful, but little known and poorly understood review process operated by the PA Department of Environmental Protection and the Chester County Conservation District can yield great results when everyone knows how to participate. Come and learn at our 2012 Spring Workshop!
When conducting their environmental reviews, the DEP, in coordination with local conservation districts, looks at the impacts to "cultural resources" which is a catch-all term for historic and archeological resources in the affected area. Knowing how to participate in the process can help preserve these resources during a land development project.
Bruce Knapp, CCHPN President, will open the Workshop at 8:30 am with a brief welcome and the introduction of Longwood Gardens Executive Director, Paul Redman.
Paul Redman will discuss the recently completed Route 52 Re-Alignment Project.
Karen Marshall, Chester County Heritage Preservation Coordinator, will introduce the morning’s Case Study, a simulated 10-Lot Subdivision Project.
Dominic Rocco, from the DEP representative will walk through the DEP Cultural Resource Approval Process, focusing on how the review process works and how results are used at the state level.
Gaye Lynn Criswell of the Chester County Conservation District will discuss the county level review process, followed by Susan Zacher, a former Historic Resource Specialist at the Bureau of Historic Preservation. Susan will share with us her experience coordinating agencies when environmental reviews involve historic resources.
The Workshop will close with what promises to be an energetic Q&A session.
All are welcome and we particularly invite members of historical commissions and planning commissions.
