Preservation
Primer
Why We Preserve
Historic Preservation is the collective effort to preserve the
historic buildings, structures, landscapes, and features of our
communities and places.
Historic preservation is Chester County is especially important
because we have so much to lose! It is difficult to drive any mile
in Chester County without seeing a historic house, springhouse,
fencerow, or field. We have so much, but we have lost a lot, and
more is lost every year.
When we lose our historic resources, we lose a primary connection
to our past, to who we are as a community and a people.
Current Preservation Issues
Loss of historic landscape context – development
that is unsympathetic to onsite or nearby historic resources,
resulting
is a diminution or loss of historic landscape context for the resources…
Loss of farm buildings – unused and
not maintained, farm buildings are often razed to remove eyesores
and reduce safety
risks…
Loss of historic building character – historic windows are
replaced with vinyl windows and historic siding obscured by vinyl
siding….
